Mackinaw City

Mackinaw City

Located on the northern headland of Michigan’s lower peninsula lies the Village of Mackinaw City. We recently chose to stay in the city to access Mackinac Island and the local hotels, which are cheaper than the hotels on the island. However, we found that Mackinaw City has more to offer than affordable hotel rooms and Mackinac Island ferry access. On the first night in Mackinaw City, we dined at Darrow’s Family Restaurant, which has been in business for 60 years….

Adventures in the Windy City, Part 2

Adventures in the Windy City, Part 2

Our second day in the Windy City proved to be as enjoyable as our first day even though it was much shorter. After breakfast at our hotel, we lugged our luggage to Union Station, where our train was departing later in the day. The boys had quite an education in early morning traffic in a big city, as we passed iconic buildings such as Willis Tower, Trump Tower, and Chicago’s Federal Reserve. At Union Station, we were able to put…

Adventures in the Windy City, Part 1

Adventures in the Windy City, Part 1

As the plane descended, we caught our first view of the Chicago skyline. The wonderful view made me forget that I had risen at 3:30 am to catch our flight. Our first introduction to Chicago was a ride on the L (CTA orange line from Midway) to our hotel, where we dropped our luggage off. Compared to a taxi, the $2 one way ticket ($10 all day) was an inexpensive and direct route to downtown. Within walking distance of our…

I-Drive McDonalds

I-Drive McDonalds

Six years ago, we left our family and friends in Kentucky for a new adventure: life in Central Florida. With so many activities and places to visit in a state where tourism is king, we weren’t quite sure where to start. One of the first places we checked out was the world’s largest entertainment McDonald’s and Play Place off of International Drive in Orlando. We were sadly disappointed as the food was not that great and the restaurant was quite…

Hollywood Brown Derby

Hollywood Brown Derby

Located near Hollywood and Vine, the Hollywood Brown Derby was a hot spot for stars during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Even though the Hollywood restaurant is no longer open for business, visitors to Walt Disney World, can dine in style at Hollywood Studio’s Hollywood Brown Derby. Like its namesake, the Floridian Brown Derby has a Spanish mission façade and is filled with caricatures of famous stars. One of the signature dishes is the Cobb Salad, which mimics the recipe…

Welcome Home Dinner at Olivia’s Cafe

Welcome Home Dinner at Olivia’s Cafe

Our house has been fairly lonely this past week as my husband has been away on a business trip. We were overjoyed to pick him up at the airport, even though the Orlando airport is a mad house on Friday night. Driving home, we decided to stop by for dinner at Olivia’s Cafe in Walt Disney World’s Old Key West. Despite being a Friday night, the restaurant was sparsely populated and we were seated quite quickly. The nautical themed dinner…

A Supercalifragilistic Breakfast

A Supercalifragilistic Breakfast

Enchanting is the word I would use to describe the Supercalifragilistic Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare located in Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort. Dining guests meet five characters including: Alice, The Mad Hatter, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Mary Poppins. Our whole family enjoyed meeting the characters and listening to their spot on impressions, especially Mary Poppins, who was “practically perfect in every way.” The customer service and all you care to enjoy buffet were wonderful. The buffet features…

A Magical Dream

A Magical Dream

We just spent three magical nights aboard Disney Cruise’s ship the Dream. I have to admit that my favorite part of a Disney Cruise is always the kids club. My kids are able to play in a safe place while I enjoy some much needed R and R with my husband and by myself. Fortunately,  my kids love the kids clubs. Even though my boys are older (11 and 12), we can’t pry them out of the Oceaneer club and…
