Scars

Scars

Many of our bodies have scars. Scars adorn knees from bike accidents. Scars remain on hands from falls in the ice. Faces may wear scars of acne or chicken pox. Other scars are not visible. Scars are left on our hearts from betrayal, loneliness, abuse, depression, anxiety, grief and a host of other emotions. It is hard to make it through life without scars. Our hearts and bodies tell the story of a life that is tough.

Jesus had scars. Jesus entered a locked room to show the disciples his scars. It is amazing to me that the God who rose from the dead chose to leave the scars. God could have erased all the remaining marks of the Lord’s betrayal. He could have hidden the marks that showed others his loneliness and abuse. Yet, Jesus entered the room where the disciples shivered in fear. He brought greetings of peace and he showed those who deserted him his scars.

God never leaves us. When we shiver in our fear, he comes to us. He shows us his scars and tells us that we aren’t alone. He knows how we feel. He knows what it is like to live with scars.
